A POEM ON UNITING TO SAVE OUR ENVIRONMENT

Thunderstorm in Kisuma

Listen!

Listen to the frightening

Horrifying

Deafening rumble

Like some mighty

Unidentified foreign object.

He heaves and sighs,

To announce its arrival

And upheaval

that scares the green city of lake Sango.

The city

Whose dazzling beauty

Is noticesed beyong

Kiboswa hills.

Demonic and traumatizing

It transcends from the west.

Roaring like a wild lion!

Full of curiosity,

and lack of knowledge

Of its harmful effects

it engulfs us in its arms.

We get entangled

In his charm

To conform to the developed world.

Weak willed

With an urge to experiment

We are swept in this storm of modernity.

The city planners and businessmen

Succumb to its weight

And force.

The inhabitant of the city estates

Succumb to its rhythm and might.

Accompanied by noise,

Disorganized Boda boda parks

That robs us

of our city’s aesthetic beauty.

And leaves us

With dirty and unkempt

Koile, and taifa parks.

Dirty waters of

Of river Nyamasaria

Proudly strolls to

the great lake.

As it gathers momentum,

The pregnant clouds

Get heavy and aggressive

As the hot afternoon

Turns gloomy,

Dull and miserable

To surrender to the storm

And all its wings.

Together we move

In several effortless effort

Whizzing like wild ghosts

Ready to attack.

But

Meekly, we remain victims.

Pata! Pata! Pata! Pata!

The storm breaks

Into droplets

It pours its fat droplets

With fury and anger!

To shower kisumu city

With showers of air pollution

Driving raw sewage into

The beautiful lake sango!

That bursts

Into numerous deaths of fish and cholera.

The storm hits

The city

With unstable and careless behaviour

Of the black hearted residents

Who bother not to care

About environment.

The storm subsides

With chilly drought

And this,

Awakens the human kind.

We assess and get sensitized

To the harmful effects

Of this  storm of environmental degradation.

As we assess the damage

Rained by the storm,

we join hands together

to promote awareness

to Combat Climate Change

to make our environment pollution free

We condemn this storm!

We encourage

And educate personal development

We unite as

A Task force

To drive away this storm.

To stop it from

Enslaving us!

With poverty, hunger and disease.

For we have a choice,

To enjoy a clean environment.
